hints: List or modify "collect" global variables

The "hints" program can be used to read and write string variables from the "hints.shelve" file.

Usage

The "hints" program is invoked by the command line:

hints [variable[=string-value]]
hints delete variable

If no arguments are given, all variables from the current "hints.shelve" file are listed. If an argument without an "=" sign is given, the value of that variable is printed. If an argument with an "=" sign is given, the variable named on the left hand side is set to the string value given on the right hand side. Setting non-string values is not possible.

If two arguments are given, "delete" and a variable name, the variable is deleted from the database.

Warning: Messing around with the values of variables used by the "collect" suite can create chaos. As such, the use of this program for setting or deleting variables is not encouraged.
